Pura Avenida is Happening!

New Community Mural Celebrates Life on the Avenue

Remember this wall?

Wall Street

It was part of a bigger dream for the community and youth on the Avenue, and now we’re just getting started!

Funded and produced by the Westside Community Development Corporation (WCDC), in partnership with the City of Ventura’s Parks and Rec Department, and led by a team of local artists, Pura Avenida stretches across a 600 ft public wall that runs along Wall Street.

The mural, designed by Cynthia Polk, features images and icons celebrating beloved features of life on the Avenue (aka Westside Ventura). It begins with the image of a young girl, masked in traditional Día de los Muertos face paint, who is blowing bubbles that flow across the wall. Each bubble represents elements of the Avenue such as the hillsides and “the point” surf spot, vintage cars, popular landmarks and iconic buildings, cultural images, foods, Chumash heritage, recreational features and more!

The mural as a whole will incorporate a variety of styles and mediums by all the different artists that make up the Avenue. Artists will be wrapping up the mural’s installation throughout January 27th to 30th and on the final day will be professionally sealed with a clear coat to protect from weather and graffiti.

Come see the dream come alive at our dedication celebration which will feature an acknowledgement of the 45 plus artists, the sponsors, a Chumash blessing, photo opportunities, and lowriders!

Date and time are still being determined. Stay tuned by signing up for the WCDC’s newsletter.
