alternative housing

Free professional services and community resources to programs and projects that yield positive community development. WINNS staff will develop one pre-approved Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) floor plan for community use and also will provide supportive services to the aid in developing community-identified programs and projects: communal gardens, implementation of new climate action technology, a Westside trade school development proposal, and increase recreation space within our existing neighborhoods. CDBG funding covers staff salaries.

Westside Innovative Solutions (WINNS) staff met with strategic partners for the development of a one-stop-shop program to encourage the development of ADUs as an alternative housing solution to high-density developments. The program intends to provide a pathway for a property owner to develop an ADU with little to no barriers.

pura
avenida

This program addresses the need for artistic and technical skill-building that can lead to entrepreneurial opportunities for area disadvantaged youth. In partnership with the STEMbassador’s IDEA Center, young adults participate in courses in a collaborative environment overseen by mentors in various related trades.

The students work hands-on with cutting-edge equipment with pathways to launch their own small businesses. The WCDC also facilitates a professional aerosol painting class for Avenue youth to build artistic skill and enhance our community’s pride of place with public art. Funding covers staffing and supplies only; free workspace off site at Two Trees Church located in a centralized part of the Westside.

westside cleanup

The bi-annual event has become a vital event for removing pollution and blight. The program specifically disposes of large refuse items and e-waste that residents may be unable to remove alone. Funding for the events cover various rentals and supplies needed as well as staff time for coordination and day-of implementation. Funding covers trash removal, staffing, and outreach materials.

one block at a time

This project addresses issues of blight in the community while enhancing neighborhood character. Funding supports supply cost and hiring of local artists. WCDC will utilize some of the youth aerosol art cohort to complete one mural in FY 26-27. Funding provides staffing, supplies, and permits

adopt a block

Adopt-A-Block is a simple, fun and FREE program. Participants agree to maintain their chosen block at least 3 times a year during community-wide Adopt-A-Block TLCY Day events. You may notice your block needs help with removing weeds, litter or graffiti. All supplies are free, thanks to the generous support of Aera Energy.

The WCDC has identified over 20 commercial blocks in the Avenue Business Corridor and 2 residential blocks in need of attention for maintenance and safety. Your group can help by giving one of these blocks tender loving care.
